Gran Canaria is located in the centre of the Canary Islands archipelago. It is part of Macaronesia, an area that includes the Azores, the Savage Islands, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and a strip of Africa, which, thanks to the influence of the Gulf Stream, has a very favourable climate.
That is why, since ancient times, they were considered the Fortunate Islands, a place where Greek heroes were sheltered after death.
Due to its climate, the island of Gran Canaria is also known as a ‘miniature continent’. On a day trip around the island, it is possible to experience all four seasons, so your backpack must be prepared for any eventuality.
Despite pleasant temperatures ranging between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius on the coast, the mountains are ideal for hiking between autumn and spring. In summer, the mountains have high temperatures during the day, which become pleasant at night. That is why we offer walks to enjoy the sunset or sunrise, as long as there are no restrictions imposed by the Government or the Cabildo of Gran Canaria.
The northern area of the island is green and has lush vegetation that benefits from the trade winds blowing from the northeast, which are filled with moisture from the cold Canary Current and bring rain or ‘horizontal rain.’
The highest area of the island, called “cumbre”, also has dense vegetation, characterised by pine forests, while the southern and western areas, which receive occasional rain from Atlantic storms, are drier and only turn green in winter.
It is always possible to find a place to walk under the sun’s rays, and the high altitude offers a variety of vegetation and views that delight the senses.
